Pingtel’s New SIP User Agent Platform to Support Earthlink’s VLING

August 29, 2005

WOBURN, August 29, 2005 — Pingtel Corp., the leading provider of open source, commercial-grade enterprise communications solutions, today announced that EarthLink (NASDAQ: ELNK), the nation’s next generation Internet service provider (ISP), is the first service provider to deploy SIPxua, Pingtel’s powerful SIP user agent platform, as part of Vling, EarthLink’s next generation free online calling service.

Pingtel’s SIPxua, designed in open source, delivers a SIP compliant, highly interoperable, feature rich foundation upon which EarthLink can easily and quickly deliver applications that enable customers to turn their PCs into phones, as well as support other instant communication applications like Internet Chat. Vling will enable any broadband Internet customer to make unlimited calls to anyone in the world that has a SIP-compatible free online calling service.

"VoIP services are changing the way consumers communicate, and Vling provides a sleek and easy-to-use interface for people to make a voice call to any SIP-based user, worldwide," said Steve Howe, EarthLink’s vice president of voice services. "To deliver such a service, we need an enterprise-grade provider to work with, and Pingtel’s flexibility, overall solution quality and adherence to SIP standards make them the obvious choice."

"Pingtel provided EarthLink with SIPxua, a high-quality, standards-based user agent platform, that met their feature, cost and functionality requirements and enabled them to build a world-class soft phone as part of their Vling service offering," said William J. Rich, president and CEO of Pingtel Corp. "By leveraging the best attributes of open source development and standards-based development, Pingtel continues to demonstrate that the market is ready and willing to embrace open source as a catalyst for change in terms of how products are developed and brought to market."

Pingtel’s SIPxua is an 100 percent native SIP enterprise user agent developed in open source. SIPxua is a full-featured standards-based SIP user agent that enables service providers, enterprise applications vendors and hardware vendors to deliver enterprise-grade VoIP solutions as part of services offerings or embedded in applications or hardware. SIPxua fills a critical market gap by delivering a complete solution – simple API interface, SIP stack, media processing, and session processing – for OEM applications. Based on the sipXtapi project hosted at SIPfoundry (www.SIPfoundry.org), Pingtel’s commercial-grade SIPxua platform is a C application programming interface for voice communications over IP. SIPxua provides a generalized TAPI-like interface on top of a powerful SIP stack and media processing infrastructure. Specifically, sipXtapi provides a generalized telephony interface on top of the SIP, RFC 3261, and the real-time Transport Protocol (RTP), RFC 1889. While the SIP and RTP protocols provide signaling and media transport infrastructure, sipXtapi also includes many other protocol and standards implementations needed for voice communications. The underlying sipXtapi technology is also used in the advanced communications features (voicemail, call routing, auto attendant, conferencing and presence) found in SIPfoundry’s open source PBX as well as Pingtel’s enterprise-grade SIP PBX and softphone products.

For OEMs and other development partners, Pingtel’s SIPxua provides a robust software development kit (SDK) that enables quick customization of SIPxua for specific applications such as softphone clients. Designed with application developers in mind, the SDK hides virtually all of the call control and media processing details enabling quick black-box voice communications. Application developers only need to understand the syntax and semantics of SIP URLs and SIP/audio related configuration settings vs. having a detailed understanding of the SIP protocol.

Pingtel’s open source SIP PBX is the linchpin technology that will catalyze the movement of enterprise communications into the data center and away from purpose-built hardware. Like enterprise-grade Linux, this approach will drive commoditization of traditional telephony hardware and software and eliminate vendor lock-ins that keep prices high and limit innovation.
